indian wedding , real indian couple story..........

how to plan a indian wedding

About the Couple Priya Bhatia, 26, and Mahesh Raju, 29, recently celebrated their Hindu wedding in Washington, DC, the bride’s hometown. Mahesh graduated from Illinois Wesylen University with a BA in business & biology, received a masters degree from Georgetown University in physiology, and his M.D. from The Medical College of VA. Priya graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BA in biology and then received her M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia.
Mahesh and Priya are both doctors and are currently residents in internal medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Priya enjoys volunteering, working out and reading while Mahesh loves maps and the Weather Channel. Both have a shared loved for sports, travel and their wonderful parents and siblings.
How They Met BY THE BRIDE: Mahesh and I met in Medical School in Virginia. It honestly took me a long time to figure out whether he was actually enrolled in School or if he just attended all of the School’s parties and made occasional appearances on campus to socialize. The first time I spoke to Mahesh I remember him telling me about he structured his entire study schedule in preparation for a big exam around the Chicago Cub’s playoff run to ensure he would not miss one minute of any game. Of course the tomboy in me absolutely loved that! I ran into him again shortly after that at a house party. Mutual friends had been trying to set us up for quite sometime so I insisted that he take me out on a date. He looked adorably clueless as always but agreed. A couple days later he sent me a strange e-mail explaining that he somehow did not get the last 2 digits of my phone number. I remember thinking to myself how strange that was and in lieu, prepared myself for what I thought would be the most disastrous date in history!
We went on our first date on February 4, 2004. The night ended with the two of us sitting next to each other on the couch, watching Sportscenter. We have been inseparable ever since. On April 28, 2006 Mahesh surprised me by not only proposing on top of the 150 ft high ferris wheel on Chicago’s Navy Pier but by also flying in my family from Washington, D.C. so that both our families could share the moment with us. In Mahesh, I see simplicity, honesty, happiness, and kindness. He is my best friend and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with him.
BY THE GROOM: Priya and I met during my second year of medical school. I knew who she was because she would be always trying to study in the same place where I would socialize; the Sanger study lounge. I would often get weird looks from her when my voice would reverberate through the room. Now I know that she was actually checking me out. During a party, she approached me and said that she thought I was cool and I responded with something like, “sure.” She then asked me to ask her out. I of course agreed because it would have been rude not to. Wow, what a difference being nice does!
After a few dates, I knew she was the one because she accepted me for who I was. I say I carry a lot of ‘baggage’ in that I come with 100 other friends and commitments, not to mention, my journeys and need to have fun, regardless of if she joins me or not. Times have finally changed in that I now seem not to have as much fun unless she is by my side. In Priya, I see loyalty, compassion, generosity and my best friend. As we have grown so much in three years, I can only imagine life years from now.
Pre-Wedding Events I did most of my wedding shopping during a trip to Bombay, India in February 2007. I went with my mom and mother-in law. If I had to do it all over again I would recommend two trips to India - the initial one to pick out your outfits etc. and the second one to do the final fitting.
Our wedding was held in Washington DC. It was a 500 person Indian wedding with a Washington DC theme. It was a 3 day event with the mendhi on Thursday at the bride’s house, a prayer, rehearsal lunch overlooking the Georgetown waterfront for our bridal party, and a sangeet party on Friday in Potomac MD, the wedding and reception on Saturday, and a farewell brunch on Sunday. We held another 600 person reception in Ilinois one month later.
The Wedding Our wedding was held on June 2, 2007 in the Andrew Mellon Auditorium on Constitution Avenue, a historic building in Washington DC. The theme of the entire event was “A Capitol Wedding” to tie in the entire DC/city theme. The Bharat started at 10:00AM on 13th and Penn Ave and proceeded across the Woodrow Wilson Plaza. We had 12 bridesmaids and 12 groomsmen, each wearing matching Indian outfits. We had a dhol player leading the bharaat and the groom was on a horse. Once guests entered the hall, they were greeted by music from a string quartet. The caterers passed around orange, strawberry, and lime green shakes to match the colors of the reception and every seat had either a wooden fan or a program. The ceremony was followed by a lunch. Mahesh and I spent the afternoon taking pictures around various monuments in DC.
The Reception The reception was held at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center on Pennsylvania Avenue and the cocktail hour was held outdoors on the Woodrow Wilson Plaza. There was a sit down dinner for 500 guests at the Reagan building, providing our guests with a wonderful Indian fusion menu. Our card boxes were piñatas of George Bush and Bill Clinton with a slot in their heads for cards. We also had an ice sculpture shaped like the capitol building, and the backdrop behind the head table was a gobo of the White House. The cake was shaped like the Capitol Building and the tables were named after various monuments, historic buildings, museums and streets in Washington DC. For the entertainment we had a George W. Bush impersonator (Brent Mendenhall) who surprised the guests and we also had our close American friends do a dance to Indian music which was amazing. The favors were marble elephant pairs for each guest
The Honeymoon We spent our honeymoon in Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia for two weeks.
Unique Touches The entire DC theme was the basis of our weekend. The welcome bags contained maps of DC and a welcome letter with a backdrop of the monument. We really wanted all of the guests from out of town (Chicago and India) to take advantage of site seeing in DC.
Bridal Wisdom Enjoy the day because it goes by way too quickly. Also, the guests can tell and really appreciate it when the couple is happy and carefree the day of. Try not to argue with your family and your significant other about little things throughout the planning process (it can drive you insane!). If you can, hire a wedding planner because they are terrific, especially the day of the event. Make sure to thank your parents and your siblings for all of their help! It’s your day, so enjoy it!

Indian weddings are very bright events, filled with ritual and celebration, that continue for several days. They are not small affairs, often with 400-1000 people attending (many of whom are unknown to the bride and groom). Though most Indian marriages are arranged, some couples in urban areas have love marriages. The true Indian wedding is about two families getting wedded socially with much less emphasis on the individuals involved.
Many of the wedding customs are common among the Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and even Muslims. They are a combination of local, religions and family traditions.

[edit] Traditions
Wedding traditions vary across religion, caste, ethnicity, language, region, etc. Traditional Indian weddings are generally structured into pre-wedding ceremonies, wedding day ceremonies (consisting of the Baraat, the Varmala and the Phere), and the Vidaai.
An example of the complexity of an Indian wedding can be seen from the various phases of a wedding in the North. The following events take place in a typical Eastern Uttar Pradesh Hindu marriage:
[edit] Gallery

Bariksha is when the bride's parents have informally shown intentions that they want a particular groom, and the groom and his family have agreed. Retracting at the end of this stage is frowned upon but is acceptable.
Tilak involves the bride's parents traveling to the groom's place to formalize the relationship. A large feast is organized by the groom's family to celebrate this occasion. Only a nominal number of members of the bride's family are present (usually only very close relatives, often in tens of numbers. Typically, the female marriage proposal is very rare.
Byaha Haath: This ceremony signifies the purifying of the mind, body and soul of bride and groom. This daytime ceremony prepares both of them for the nuptials. 'Uptan' is a mixed paste of sandalwood, turmeric and rose water which is applied by seven unmarried female members of the families and to the faces, hands and feet of the bride and groom. After this ceremony the bride and the groom are not allowed to step outside the house before the actual wedding.
